Overview

LMI is seeking a Network Integration Engineer to support the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Program Management Office (PMO). This role is designed for engineers who thrive at the intersection of mission operations and applied technology—helping plan, implement, and evaluate networked systems that support national security and border protection.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, the Network Integration Engineer will assess, integrate, and refine network architectures that enable the deployment and operation of advanced surveillance, detection, communications, and mobile command systems across challenging operational environments.

Location & Travel: This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C., with up to 40% domestic travel.

LMI is a consultancy dedicated to powering a future-ready, high-performing government, drawing from expertise in digital and analytic solutions, logistics, and management advisory services. We deliver integrated capabilities that incorporate emerging technologies and are tailored to customers’ unique mission needs, backed by objective research and data analysis. Founded in 1961 to help the Department of Defense resolve complex logistics management challenges, LMI continues to enable growth and transformation, enhance operational readiness and resiliency, and ensure mission success for federal civilian and defense agencies.

Responsibilities

Applied Network Engineering & Field Systems Support

  • Support the design, integration, and field evaluation of secure, resilient network architectures supporting CBP mission systems.
  • Evaluate network performance and integration of systems including surveillance towers, mobile command units, wireless sensors, biometric screening stations, and counter-UAS platforms.
  • Analyze and troubleshoot complex physical and logical network topologies across fixed and mobile deployments.
  • Interpret and develop network schematics and diagrams to inform system readiness, deployment planning, and operational understanding.
  • Collaborate with CBP stakeholders and field operators to validate network capabilities under real-world conditions and mission constraints.

Network Operations & Security Integration

  • Apply knowledge of routers, switches, firewalls, WAN optimizers, and VPNs to optimize connectivity and resilience across distributed systems.
  • Support Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF), segmentation strategies, and secure communication pathways in collaboration with DHS enterprise teams.
  • Leverage Network Operations Center (NOC) and Security Operations Center (SOC) experience to support fault detection, incident response, and continuous situational awareness across mission-critical network infrastructure.
  • Work with Information System Security Officers (ISSOs) to support vulnerability management, patching, and continuous monitoring activities.
  • Assist in scheduling, documenting, and resolving outcomes from penetration testing, red/blue team assessments, and application of STIG configurations.

Mission Engineering and Applications

  • Provide technical input on system requirements, capability assessments, and field architecture trade-offs for networked systems.
  • Contribute to the development of engineering documentation including Interface Control Documents (ICDs), Concepts of Operations (CONOPS), Functional Requirements Documents (FRDs), and Test Plans.
  • Support planning and execution of technical demonstrations and system acceptance tests with emphasis on communications infrastructure and integration performance.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary teams to ensure fielded solutions align with operational goals, acquisition timelines, and user needs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Network Engineering, Systems Engineering, Applied Physics, or related technical discipline
  • 10+ years of relevant experience (or 5+ with MS) in network engineering, integration, or RDT&E roles
  • Hands-on experience supporting field deployments or evaluating mission systems in operational environments strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with DHS or DoD acquisition lifecycles and systems engineering processes (e.g., SELC, ALF)
  • Ability to synthesize technical issues into clear, mission-aligned recommendations for both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and coordination skills in multidisciplinary team settings

Certifications & Clearance:

  • Preferred Certifications: Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), or related
  • Security Requirement: U.S. Citizenship and ability to obtain CBP Background Investigation (BI); active CBP BI highly preferred

Target salary range: $108,324 - $186,052
