Overview

LMI is seeking a skilled Network Communications Engineer SME in Colorado Springs, CO or Chantilly, VA. The Network Communications Engineer is the subject matter expert (SME) on all matters relating to communication systems and ensures as accurate portrayal of all aspects of space and ground communication systems (e.g., capabilities, development, testing, operations, processing) in technical discussions, and in the development and execution of studies, analyses, algorithms, models, simulations, and other technical products and efforts tasked. This role involves both engineering tasks and strategic planning to improve the national communications infrastructure, ensuring reliable and secure systems across all platforms. Occasional travel is required. This position requires an active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility.

Responsibilities

  • Recognized as a network communications subject matter expert, specifically in the areas of wireless RF communications, laser communications, signal processing, ground networks and coding.
  • Supports the Government in a technical capacity for planning, execution, monitoring, and oversight of ground and space communication systems development and acquisitions.
  • Applies advanced technologies, scientific principles, theories, and concepts to develop novel network communication system solutions.
  • Develops and maintains an in-depth understanding of system level requirements for assigned systems and the design features that satisfy these requirements.
  • Oversees design and development of network systems and components.
  • Assists the government in developing concept of operations (CONOPS) and approaches for network orchestration and resilient communication architectures.
  • Leads and prepares trade studies, system sensitivity studies, design optimization studies, system performance assessments, and system design assessments.
  • Ensures research and development (R&D) efforts are planned and conducted on sound engineering practices including management of technical risks.
  • Frequently interact and develop productive relationships with program managers, SETAs, FFRDCs, and external stakeholders.
  • Support risk management processes and methods for identifying, assessing, and adjudicating program risk; Conduct analysis to identify program risk areas and recommend/implement mitigation approaches and lead tasks to closure.
  • Develop documents and briefings to communicate work status, briefs to government as required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field with 17+ years of professional experience or master's degree in a STEM field with 15+ years of professional experience.
  • Significant background in wireless network protocols, telecommunication standards and satellite communications.
  • Strong understanding of communications systems including radio frequency (RF) design, digital communication, satellite systems, and networking.
  • Proficient with communication network design software and tools, and knowledgeable about routing, switching, and IP protocols.
  • Able to work independently and thrive and work collaboratively across disciplines in a fast paced, dynamic, and small team environment.
  • Strong organization and communication skills, verbal and written.
  • Proven ability to work within integrated Government, FFRDC, and SETA teams.
  • Ability for occasional travel.
  • Active Top Secret Government security clearance. US Citizenship required.

Desired

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, or a related field; relevant certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent)
  • Experience with network development, missions and applications of network systems, including scientific and intelligence support efforts, and DoD missions, performance metrics, project plans and schedules, and concepts of operation is desired.
  • Ten (10) years of experience in the field of communication systems analysis, design, development, fabrication, integration, test and operations.
  • Five (5) years space acquisition or operations experience
  • Demonstrated strong technical leadership, interpersonal, and team building skills.
  • High level of creativity, initiative systems thinking, and innovation.
  • Active Top Secret/SCI Government security clearance.

 

Target salary range: $125,460 - $223,380
