Overview

LMI is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to support a federal Program Management Office (PMO) responsible for identifying, acquiring, and fielding emerging technologies to enhance U.S. border security operations. This role is ideal for engineers who bring a strong foundation in electrical design, systems integration, and applied problem-solving—and who are excited to contribute to the evaluation, deployment, and transition of innovative technologies in real-world mission environments. This position requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain a CBP Background Investigation (BI) is required; active CBP BI preferred.

As part of an interdisciplinary technical team, the Electrical Engineer will apply expertise across a wide range of power and electrical systems used to support advanced capabilities such as surveillance platforms, remote sensing, autonomous systems, mobile operations, and field-based communications. The role blends hands-on engineering with field validation, supporting the integration of next-generation technologies into operational use at the tactical edge.

Location & Travel: This is a full-time position based in Washington, D.C., with up to 50% domestic travel.

LMI is a consultancy dedicated to powering a future-ready, high-performing government, drawing from expertise in digital and analytic solutions, logistics, and management advisory services. We deliver integrated capabilities that incorporate emerging technologies and are tailored to customers’ unique mission needs, backed by objective research and data analysis. Founded in 1961 to help the Department of Defense resolve complex logistics management challenges, LMI continues to enable growth and transformation, enhance operational readiness and resiliency, and ensure mission success for federal civilian and defense agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the subject matter expert for electrical engineering within a federal technical program office, providing guidance on the planning, design, integration, and evaluation of electrical and power systems.
  • Analyze and define electrical system requirements to support field-deployed technologies such as surveillance towers, remote sensors, communications nodes, and mobile command units.
  • Design and assess low-voltage and power distribution systems, including primary service, backup power, grounding, lighting, and protection systems.
  • Assess backup power requirements, including generator sizing, solar integration, hybrid solutions, and energy storage considerations in austere environments.
  • Review and provide technical input on engineering design packages, electrical system specifications, and cost estimates; ensure compliance with applicable codes and DHS standards.
  • Support the assessment, adaptation, and field validation of emerging technologies requiring specialized electrical support, including autonomous surveillance systems, rapidly deployable sensors, and integrated energy solutions.
  • Coordinate with civil, mechanical, and communications engineers, facility managers, and program stakeholders to ensure integrated system designs and successful project execution.
  • Provide engineering insight for value engineering analyses, technical risk assessments, and cost-benefit studies.
  • Travel to project sites to conduct field assessments, support design reviews, inspect installation work, and participate in Integrated Project Teams (IPTs).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required; Master’s degree is a plus.
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in electrical engineering with emphasis on infrastructure systems, power distribution, or applied mission systems.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
  • Familiarity with NEC, NFPA, IEEE, and other applicable electrical and construction codes and standards.
  • Experience working with federal agencies (e.g., DHS, DoD) or on mission-driven technology programs is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, technical specifications, and performance requirements.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint).
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and coordination skills.
  • Ability to travel up to 50% to support site visits and program reviews.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a CBP Background Investigation (BI) is required; active CBP BI preferred.

Target salary range: $108,324 - $186,052
