Overview

LMI is seeking a Laboratory Scientist to join our DHS CWMD BioDefense Team. This position requires an Active Secret clearance and the ability to obtain DHS Suitability. This position can be supported remotely. 

 

With the threat of transnational terrorism and ongoing development of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) by nations potentially hostile to the U.S., DHS has taken steps to integrate the full range of its radiological, nuclear, chemical, and biological capabilities to enhance the nation’s abilities to prevent terrorists and other threat actors from using WMD, and support operational partners in closing capability gaps along adversary pathways.  As the focal point for this effort, DHS Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (CWMD) Operations Support Directorate (OSD) requires advisory and assistance services to effectively operationalize CWMD by developing and enhancing the capabilities of the DHS Components as well as federal, state, local, territorial and tribal (FSLTT) partners.  LMI provides advisory and assistance services to CWMD Operations Support Directorate (OSD).

Responsibilities

  • Support the BioWatch federal lead with management and execution BioWatch laboratory operations.
  • Support laboratory logistics issues including identifying, purchasing, and tracking laboratory equipment and supplies. 
  • Provide technical review, comments, and recommendations on laboratory operations reports received from various sources.
  • Develop study plans and evaluate data and/or reports related to efforts to optimize laboratory processes including, but not limited to processing of environmental samples, analytical techniques, and changes in technology.
  • Conduct periodic reviews of the Biodetection Laboratory Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and the Laboratory Quality Assurance Program Plan (QAPP) at the direction of the DLO, and update as necessary.
  • Perform the functions of expert in the relevant scientific field in support of major programs or system development.
  • Coordinate and manage the preparation of analysis, evaluations, and recommendations for proper implementation of programs and systems.
  • Assist the Laboratory Operations A&AS team with administrative support (e.g., drafting communication, triaging shared inbox, planning and facilitating meetings, etc.)

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology or related field.
  • Active Secret clearance and ability to obtain DHS suitability clearance.
  • 10 years of experience in laboratory based science generating analytical results from testing of clinical or environmental samples, or 7 years of experience with a Master's degree.
  • Excellent communications skills, both oral and written.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology or related field (7 years of experience).
  • Knowledge and experience in CBRN material as well as an understanding of the hazards associated with their manufacture, transport and use.
  • BioWatch laboratory operations experience.
