Overview

LMI is seeking Health Informatics Analysts/Clinical Workflow Analysts for two full-time openings supporting Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) modernization initiatives. These roles provide hands-on clinical workflow research and implementation support, working directly with clinicians and operational teams to document current-state workflows, identify burden and failure points, support measurement, and observe pilots in real operating conditions.

This position follows a hybrid work model, with an expectation of approximately 25% onsite presence at LMI’s Tysons headquarters or Washington, DC.

The Health Informatics Analyst/Clinical Workflow Analyst is a field-oriented role for someone who can learn how care is actually delivered and represent that reality accurately to designers, analysts, and technical teams. The analyst should be comfortable observing work, asking detailed questions, documenting exceptions, and separating stated procedures from the workarounds and constraints that shape real operations.

The role requires sensitivity to clinical context and the discipline to escalate rather than independently resolve questions that affect clinical judgment or safety. At the same time, the analyst must be proactive in translating observations into clear workflow artifacts, requirements, measures, implementation findings, and actionable recommendations for the broader team.

The analyst will often support several efforts at once, so disciplined documentation and follow-through are essential. The person should keep interview notes, workflow artifacts, assumptions, questions, evidence, and action items organized so another team member can understand how a conclusion was reached and what still needs validation.

The ideal candidate combines healthcare workflow knowledge with strong interviewing, process documentation, measurement, and implementation-observation skills and knows when clinical or safety concerns require escalation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct clinical stakeholder interviews, workflow observation, contextual inquiry, and structured discovery.
  • Document users, steps, decision points, information inputs, handoffs, pain points, burden, failure modes, and intended outcomes.
  • Support baseline development, measure definitions, data-source identification, and interpretation of clinical context.
  • Observe pilots and implementation activities; capture adoption barriers, unintended effects, workload changes, and user feedback.
  • Create clear workflow maps, evidence notes, requirements, and implementation observations for HCD, data, and technical teams.
  • Coordinate with clinicians, HCD/UX, data analysts, engineers, and program staff across multiple concurrent efforts.
  • Escalate material clinical workflow, safety, usability, or human-oversight concerns to senior clinical leadership.
  • Maintain traceable documentation and reusable workflow lessons for future VA initiatives.
  • Plan and conduct structured interviews and observations with representative users across roles, locations, shifts, or care settings so workflow findings reflect meaningful variation rather than a single perspective.
  • Develop current-state and future-state process maps that capture exceptions, rework, handoffs, decision points, information sources, timing, dependencies, and points where technology changes could add or reduce burden.
  • Translate clinical workflow findings into user needs, acceptance considerations, measure definitions, requirements, risks, and implementation questions that technical and program teams can act on.
  • Support adoption and implementation analysis by documenting training needs, role changes, local variation, unintended workarounds, support issues, and conditions that affect successful use in practice.
  • Coordinate with specialty clinicians and operational SMEs to validate workflow findings, clarify exceptions, and ensure artifacts accurately reflect the roles and care settings affected by a proposed change.
  • Support requirements and acceptance development by connecting observed workflow needs to representative scenarios, user roles, edge cases, measures, and implementation conditions that should be tested.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in health informatics, nursing, public health, health administration, biomedical informatics, healthcare management, or a related field.
  • 6+ years in health informatics, clinical workflow analysis, healthcare operations, digital health, clinical research support, or related work.
  • Strong healthcare interviewing, observation, process mapping, workflow documentation, and stakeholder-engagement skills.
  • Experience with clinical/operational measures, pilot observation, sensitive health information, and cross-functional implementation teams.
  • Recommended certification: CPHIMS, AHIC, Lean Six Sigma, or relevant clinical/informatics credential; active clinical license is valued where applicable.
  • Ability to satisfy VA personnel vetting and requirements for privacy, security, records, and sensitive health information.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting qualitative or workflow research in healthcare settings and turning observations into process maps, requirements, evidence summaries, or implementation recommendations.
  • Strong facilitation and relationship-building skills with clinicians, administrators, operational staff, technical teams, and other stakeholders who may have limited time and different perspectives.
  • Ability to recognize potential patient/Veteran safety, privacy, workload, usability, or human-oversight concerns and escalate them clearly without exceeding the role's clinical decision authority.
  • Strong organization and analytical discipline for managing interview notes, process maps, findings, requirements, action items, and traceability across multiple concurrent clinical workstreams.
  • Comfort using common collaboration, process-mapping, presentation, and data tools to create clear artifacts for clinicians, analysts, designers, engineers, and program leaders.

Desired Qualifications

  • 8+ years in VA/VHA, federal health, digital health, healthcare operations, clinical informatics, or workflow transformation.
  • Experience with clinical decision support, workflow automation, AI-enabled tools, implementation science, usability research, or quality improvement.
  • Experience supporting clinical pilots, adoption measurement, or workflow redesign across multiple care settings.
  • Additional nursing informatics, clinical informatics, CPHIMS/AHIC, PMP, or Lean Six Sigma certification is preferred.
  • Direct experience with EHR-enabled workflows, ambulatory or inpatient operations, specialty care, contact centers, clinical documentation, or other complex healthcare processes is preferred.
  • Active or prior clinical practice, advanced informatics training, implementation-science experience, Lean/Six Sigma, CPHIMS/AHIC, or related credentials are valuable.
  • Experience with clinical research operations, quality improvement, patient-safety initiatives, implementation science, or health-services improvement can strengthen the candidate profile.
  • Prior VA/VHA experience is highly desirable because familiarity with Veteran care settings, federal health operations, and distributed clinical workflows can shorten the learning curve.

Target salary range: $145,000-$175,000
